Ahliah is proud to share that the American University of Beirut (AUB) Board has renamed the AUB Teaching Excellence Award, originally established in 2002, as the Saouma Boujaoude Teacher Excellence Award. This honor recognizes Dr. Boujaoude’s outstanding contributions to science education and his unwavering commitment to promoting scientific literacy at AUB, in Lebanon, and internationally.
Ahliah community extends heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Boujaoude, who has been a dedicated member of Ahliah’s Board of Trustees since 2010. Through his leadership on the academic committee, he has significantly contributed to major transformations in the school over the past decade.
About Dr. Saouma Boujaoude
Dr. Saouma Boujaoude began his career as an assistant professor of science education at Syracuse University, New York, from 1988 to 1993. In 1993, he joined AUB, where he has since played key leadership roles, including as Director of the Science and Math Education Center (SMEC) from 1994 to 2003, Chair of the Department of Education from 2003 to 2009, and since 2009, Director of both SMEC and the Center for Teaching and Learning.
Dr. Boujaoude’s work has been widely recognized, with his research published in esteemed international journals, including the Journal of Research in Science Teaching, Science Education, International Journal of Science Education, Journal of Science Teacher Education, The Science Teacher, and School Science Review. He has also contributed chapters to various books in both English and Arabic, and is a frequent speaker at local, regional, and international conferences on education and science education.
In addition to his academic achievements, Dr. Boujaoude is an active member of several international science education research associations and has served on the Executive Board of the National Association for Research in Science Teaching. He also serves on editorial boards of numerous science education journals and regularly reviews for others. Notably, in 2009, he was appointed to the Executive Committee of the Supreme Education Council of the State of Qatar.
Dr. Boujaoude has provided consultation services to educational institutions across Lebanon and the Arab world through AUB’s Office of Regional External Programs. His projects include the D-RASATI project in Lebanon, the Qatar University Project, the Dhofar University Project in Oman, the Azm School in Lebanon, and the Nibras School in Dubai.
