Ahliah Choir once again excels at yet another event at the American University of Beirut “Zaki Nassif Festival”.

The much-anticipated event finally took place on Wednesday May 9, at the AUB Assembly Hall, with a full house of guests including members from Ahliah Board of Trustees, alumni, teachers, staff, and parents all coming together to support our outstanding Choristers.

Ms. Rula Baalbaki, the Project Coordinator, whom we have collaborated with in several events, opened the night with a welcome message describing the four “happiness”of the night, where the second, being the Ahliah Choir. She expressed that as an alumna, she is proud that Ahliah School still has a Music Program and a Choir, a rare aspect nowadays in many schools, she added, “this teaches the students to nurture their souls, and teaches aspects of the Arabic and English language like no other activity would”. Ms. Rula Baalbaki also thanked the Ahliah Choir coordinator, Ms. Rana Samaha, for helping in maintaining this tradition that has been part of Ahliah’s Culture ever since 1935, when the renowned Alexis Boutros and Ms. Wadad Cortas founded the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts, and as of 1939, pioneering with music and performing arts in its curriculum.

The Ahliah Choir performance in Pot Fleuri was a true testimonial of hard work, commitment and talent. The Choristers’performance truly preserved the musical heritage of the phenomenal Zaki Nassif, in an unforgettable performance.

"Pot Fleuri in Translation" is a concert that featured a selection of popular lyrics and Quasa'ed which have been translated by students in literary translation classes over a period of 4 years. The selected pieces have been translated from English to  Arabic, and vice versa,  as part of the English 233 and 262 courses at AUB.  Translations into the Arabic include songs from THE SOUND OF MUSIC, MARY POPPINS, and MAMMA MIA. The audience also enjoyed classical quasa'ed and lyrics by Abdelwahhab, Zaki Nassif, Sabah, Abdelhalim Hafez, Shadia, Fairouz, Mohammad Fawzi and ABU. The songs were performed in both Arabic and English.

Zaki Nassif Program of Music at AUB, Ahliah School, the Department of English at FAS, and the Center for Arts and Humanities (CAH) collaborated in this musical concert to bring together AUB and Ahliah School communities and the interested public, a “pot fleuri”of songs performed by the Ahliah School Choir and some students from the translation classes of spring 2018. They were all trained by Manal Abu Malhab (Zaki Nassif Program), Rana Samaha (Ahliah Choir), and accompanied by Rami Saleh, the Music Ensemble Conductor, and the musicians of the Zaki Nassif Program.

We would like to thank every member of the Ahliah Choir and the Zaki Nassif Arabic Ensemble, along with their trainers, Ms. Samaha and Ms. Bou Malhab and the Project Coordinator Ms. Rula Baalbaki, for giving us the chance to relive a nostalgic “pot fleuri” of live songs.
